Although I typically work on very smooth surfaces to create hyperreal pieces, I wanted to push into more textural and impressionist styles for this painting. My reference (below) was of an overgrown waterwheel in Oshino Hakkai, a small town near the base of Mt. Fuji. I just loved the speckled moss and drips of water as it rotated slowly. It honestly hurt my brain to work so imprecisely and I was amazed at how much paint I went through so quickly, but I loved playing with colors and I love how I managed to elevate some of the blander colors.
